The Bundesliga consists of the top German football clubs. The Bundesliga is one of Europe's top five football leagues. In term of the German league system, the Bundesliga which was formed in 1963 is considered as the highest level of the German league. Bundesliga as a term is also used in Austrian football as well as several other sports in 2 additional countries. The Bundesliga is now operated by the Deutsche Football Liga but originally it was founded by the German Football Association.

The Bundesliga has two divisons, the top divison is called bundesliga and the second divison of the Budesliga is simply called Bundesliga 2 (also called: Second Bundesliga. Every football team in the Bundesliga and the Second Bundesliga must be licensed to play. Football teams in the Bundesliga can get a license only if they meet the criteria of the Bundesliga which has strict requirements regarding the financial team status, standards of conduct and more.

Football teams in the Bundesliga are very popular and have many supporting fans. The teams attract a lot of attention from all the national and European media and enjoy a huge exposure which is accompanied with a great financial benefit thanks to the teams ability to sell broadcast revenues, attract lucrative sponsors and sell rights to use the team brand for marketing. This makes the Budesliga have a very strong financial background as an organization.
The Budesliga uses the old German system of promotion and relegation of football teams:
  • The bottom two finishing teams in the Bundesliga are relegated automatically to the second Budesliga while the top two finishing teams in the second Bundesliga are replacing them
  • The third of the bottom three finishing teams in the Bundesliga will play a 2-legged match against the team who finished in the top third place in the second bundesliga. The winning team will play in the budesliga within the following season.
The bundesliga season begins in august and end at the end of May, during the bundesliga season there's a six weeks long winter break between the middle of December and the end of January. Bundesliga matches usually played during the weekends on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
