About

Napoli football club (AKA Napoli, S.S.C. Napoli or officially Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli), is an Italian professional football club that spent most of its history at the Seria A. The club, a leader in the southern Italy football scene, has a huge body of fans, and his estimated 4th in popularity in Italy. The club has known ups and downs, and had to wait until 1986-7 season for its first Seria A title. Another Seria A title was won on 1989-90 with AC Milan as the runners up. The club won the Coppa Italia (the Italian Cup) 3 times. First major international achievement was won on the 1988-89 season when S.S.C. Napoli (with Diego Maradona) took home the UEFA Cup.

The club was founded in 1904 and turned professional on 1926. Napoli broke the world transfer record fee when Diego Maradona was purchased from Barcelona FC for $12 million, on the summer of 1984. Maradona lead the way to the club’s golden age that lasted only for a few very successful years and were followed by serious decline to Seria B and Seria C. In 2004 the club underwent bankruptcy and was saved by film producer Aurelio De Laurentiis.

As a result of the bankruptcy S.S.C. Napoli was forced to change its name. After one season at the seria B (2006) the club returned to the Seria A and is playing there since. Despite of Napoli’s ups and downs, the club supporters stayed loyal and arrived to the matches by the thousands. The popularity of the club, even at its short relegation to Seria C1 (the Southern Italian League) in the 2005-6 season, the club enjoyed a support that surpasses many Seria A clubs. Napoli holds long term rivalry with A.S. Roma and the matches between the two clubs are referred to as Derby del Sole (Derby of the Sun).

The current squad is mostly Italian (with defender Paolo Cannavaro as captain) and a few South American players, mostly from Argentina and Uruguay.
